System Architecture
Below is a diagram and descriptions of how the system works when sending and receiving secure messages between users. But remember, besides scanning your fingerprint, all of this is done automatically for you so the system is very easy to use!
(All communications with the SafeLive SendItSecure server are over secure, encrypted, SSL connections.)
- The sending user composes a message, clicks send, and scans his or her fingerprint. The fingerprint model is sent to the SafeLive SendItSecure server for authentication.
- If the fingerprint matches the previously enrolled (recorded) fingerprint, then the server returns a unique message encryption key.
- The sending user's computer then encrypts the message using the key returned from the server and sends the encrypted message as an attachment (with a .sfl or .sendit extension) to the receiving user via the existing e-mail system.
- The receiving user receives the message in his or her regular inbox. Note that if an unauthorized user intercepts the e-mail (even system administrators), the interceptor will NOT be able to open it.
- If the receiving user is using Microsoft Outlook, he just double-clicks on the message to activate the SendItSecure client. Otherwise, he can open the attachment to activate the SendItSecure client. He then scans his fingerprint and it is sent to the SafeLive SendItSecure server for authentication and ensures that he is indeed an authorized recipient of the message.
- If the fingerprint matches the previously enrolled fingerprint and he is authorized to open this message, the server returns the message decryption key. The receiving user's computer decrypts the message and it is displayed on his screen. When the user closes the message, the unencrypted data is deleted so it always remains in a secure state.
